As there are a number of conditions that can affect the eyes, and since some of them can cause irreversible loss of vision without other symptoms, it is important to have an eye examination periodically. Hawaiian Eye Center recommends a complete general eye examination yearly for anyone over the age of 60 or with anyone who suffers from diabetes. For others, an examination every 2 to 3 years is usually sufficient if there are no active eye problems.
General Eye Care Services
For general eye care, when all you need are glasses or a complete eye exam, an optometrist or an ophthalmologist can evaluate and treat you. An optometrist is trained in the prescribing and making of glasses and can also do a complete eye examination and treat straightforward self-limited problems such as minor infections and allergies. An ophthalmologist has more extensive training than an optometrist and has earned a medical degree in general medicine before specializing in the eyes. The ophthalmologist can do everything the optometrist does, plus perform surgery and care for complex medical problems in the eyes such as glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic eye disease, and severe infections.
Cornea Care
The cornea is the clear window on the surface of the eye which allows light to enter the eye and it is also responsible for focusing light. The cornea can lose its clarity through infections, inflammatory conditions, degenerative conditions and trauma. Loss of corneal clarity leads to reduced vision. At Hawaiian Eye Center, we are fortunate to have Dr. Steven Rhee who is a fellowship trained cornea specialist. He treats cornea conditions and also has experience with corneal procedures including advanced corneal transplantation procedures. New procedures allow some cornea transplant patients improved vision with a shortened healing and recovery time.
